Women in Leadership: The First All-Female Ticket
By Rini Sampath
When we decided to run together, Jordan and I knew we would face many challenges. For one, we are both women. But also, we are both women of color. But having worked with each other since our very first days in USG and having spearheaded projects like open forums between administrators and students, proposals to improve accessibility for students with disabilities, and pitched the idea to grant fall housing for spring admits, we knew we had unparalleled momentum as a team. And we could not let our race and gender hold us back. As the first all-female ticket in the PAC-12, we hope to see women run for student government every single year. Whenever we do receive pushback or criticism for things we cannot change, we think of the outpour of love and support we have received. We are so grateful to have a group of incredibly passionate students backing our cause. These are the individuals who keep us going everyday and we want other women interested in running for office to know they too can build teams like this. Perhaps that is the most difficult thing as a woman — to see yourself in such positions or shoes when tradition paints the portrait of a President as a man in a suit. But it is possible, and we can break barriers each day with small steps like running for office on our campuses.
